Blot fresh perfume oil gently without rubbing, then read the care label before any treatment. Test a mild approach on a hidden seam, wash only as the label allows and check the area before drying. Never iron over a remaining mark, because heat can make it harder to lift. Ask for professional care for delicate or unlabelled fabrics.

How to Remove Perfume Oil (Attar) Stains from Clothes

Why do perfume oil and attar marks behave differently from water spills?

Attar and other perfume oils are oil-based, so they do not simply evaporate the way a splash of water does. A drop can spread into the fibres, leave a darker ring on light fabric or a shiny patch on dark fabric, and become more visible after the garment has been worn in warm weather. Some fragrances are also coloured, which can add a tint to the mark.

Each fabric reacts differently. Cotton thobes, polyester abayas, silk scarves and blended prayer clothes do not all tolerate the same washing temperature or handling. That is why the first step is always the care label rather than a general home remedy. A method that works on a sturdy cotton shirt can damage a delicate scarf, embroidery or a lined garment.

Fragrance on clothing can also transfer. A stained sleeve folded against a clean garment in a suitcase may pass the scent or oil to the other item. Separate marked clothing early, keep it away from clean reserves and decide on treatment once you can see the fabric properly in good light.

What should you do in the first minutes after a spill?

Lift excess oil by blotting with a clean, dry, light-coloured cloth or tissue. Press gently and move to a clean part of the cloth each time. Do not rub hard, because rubbing can push oil deeper and roughen the surface of the fabric. Work from the outside of the mark towards the centre to avoid widening the ring.

Avoid heat at this stage. Do not use a hair dryer on the area, do not put the garment in a dryer and do not press it with an iron. Heat can set an oil mark so that later washing has less effect. If you are travelling, let the garment rest flat and separate until you can read the label and plan the next step.

If the item only needs pressing after it is clean, our iron and fold service is 13 SAR/kg for pressing and folding only. It does not include washing or stain treatment. For a perfume oil mark, ask for a washing quote on WhatsApp and describe the stain, fabric and care label before collection.

    Which treatment suits which fabric?

Fabric or garmentPractical first stepWhen to stop and ask for help
Cotton thobe or shirtBlot, check label, test a mild treatment on a hidden seam, wash as the label allowsIf the ring stays after a label-safe wash
Polyester or blended abayaBlot gently, avoid heat, follow the label's temperature limitIf the surface becomes shiny or the colour changes
Silk or delicate scarfBlot only and keep flat; avoid soaking without label guidanceBefore any washing if the label is unclear
Embroidered or beaded garmentKeep trim dry where possible and blot around itIf the mark touches stitching, beads or lining
Unlabelled garmentBlot and keep separateBefore trying any treatment

The table is general practical guidance, not a guarantee that any method will remove every mark. Always test on a hidden area such as an inside seam first and stop if the colour, texture or shine changes. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for any product you use, and do not combine products.

Dark garments can hide an oil mark until light catches the surface. Check them near a window or under good lighting after washing and before drying, so a remaining patch is not set by heat.

How do you wash out what remains without setting it?

Once the label allows washing, wash the garment at the temperature it permits. After washing, check the stained area while the fabric is still damp. If the mark is still visible, do not dry or iron the garment yet. Repeat a label-safe treatment or leave it for professional care instead of applying heat.

The same rule applies to other marks you may find in the same load. For sweat lines and odour on everyday garments, see removing sweat stains from thobes and abayas. For residue from Zamzam water on white fabric, read Zamzam water stains on white clothes. Each guide covers a different type of mark, so treat them separately.

Air the garment after cleaning so remaining fragrance can fade. Keep it away from clean clothes until it is dry and you are satisfied with the result. If a slight scent remains on an otherwise clean garment, airing is gentler than repeated washing.

When should you hand the garment to a laundry instead?

Hand it over when the fabric is delicate, the care label is missing or unclear, the mark is large, or home treatment has already changed the colour or texture. Mention the stain type, when it happened and what you have tried. That information helps decide whether washing is suitable and what result is realistic.

Express laundry is 25 SAR/kg with about 3 hours for suitable orders after confirmation, and regular washing is quoted on WhatsApp. Pickup and delivery are always free with no minimum order. Pickup is about 15 minutes after confirmation, 24/7. Handover is at the main lobby or the ground-floor entrance only, never guest rooms or guest floors.

Keep the stained item in its own bag, label it as stained and tell us which garment it is. A clearly identified item is easier to check on collection and on return, and it prevents oil from spreading to the rest of the load.

What about perfume, attar or scented detergent in Ihram?

This guide is about removing marks from fabric. It does not rule on wearing perfume, using attar or washing with scented detergent while in Ihram. Ask a qualified scholar about your exact circumstances. The site's existing scholarly reference on washed Ihram and fragrance is background reading, not a ruling from this guide.

If you have a fragrance concern about laundry products, tell us the exact request before collection instead of assuming a general service description covers it. Practical care and religious questions are separate, and the religious question should go to a qualified scholar.

To prevent new marks, let perfume oil absorb into skin before dressing, keep small bottles upright and sealed in a separate pouch, and pack them away from clean clothing. Prevention is easier than removing an oil ring from a favourite garment during a short stay.
